Features
Arundel Castle, the seat of the Fitzalan-Howard family, Dukes of Norfolk, was built in 1067 by the cousin of William (I) the Conqueror, Roger Montgomery, to defend the Arun valley; its large stone keep dates from the 12th century. During the English Civil War the castle was besieged from 1643 to 1644 and almost ruined by Oliver Cromwell's Parliamentary troops. It was rebuilt in the 18th century and much restoration work was carried out in 1890.
